North Central Lakes Collaborative

1000 Friends of Minnesota actively participates in the North Central Lakes Collaborative (NCLC). The NCLC was launched in 2003, as one of five pilot project areas under Governor Pawlenty’s Clean Water Initiative. Since its inception, the NCLC has made important contributions to sustainable communities and healthy lakes in the region and statewide, including development of the Alternative Shoreland Management Standards, implementation of a regional wastewater treatment strategy to promote regular maintenance and inspection of on-site sewage treatment systems common in rural Minnesota, and promotion of natural resource inventories and conservation easements as tools to help communities become more sustainable.
